Becoming a CPA
I live right next to a CPA. There were many times when I was growing up when the conversations with him would turn to the subject of money. He always seemed to know exactly what he was talking about and he always gave me and my brothers a lot of good financial advice on many occasions.
This interaction was enough to inspire my brother to become a CPA himself and follow in those footsteps. I was a little surprised because my brother had never really been a great student, and the process to become an accountant can be a tough one.
Being a CPA requires a lot of schooling, and there are a lot of regulations even after you become a professional. One of them is Continuing Professional Education, or CPE. There are many ways an accountant can fulfill his or her CPE requirements (online, in a classroom, or independently), and my brother decided to go the online route.
My brother easily found some step-by-step instructions online that took him through the whole process of online CPE courses. He really was interested in making this happen, so I really think he has a good chance of doing well in his field.
There are a lot of steps to go through if you’re interesting in becoming a CPA. There are a lot of courses and classes you have to take, and then there is a serious test at the end of it. If this is something you are good at, you will be able to have a career that you really consider fun. I, however, was never one of those people who were cut out for this work.
The reason why there are so many steps to becoming a CPA is because your clients have to know they can trust you with their money. If it is lost or irresponsibly used, they will be in a lot of trouble. Succeeding as a CPA means really knowing your stuff.
There are a lot of horror stories around that involve unskilled accountants making a mess of a person’s finances and costing them a lot of money. If you want to avoid being lumped in with that group, you have to build a good reputation from the start.
I have had my share of accounting classes in school, and I suppose I did well enough, but I was never really into it. My mind just wanders too much, sometimes. I do my own taxes, but I couldn’t be like my brother and go through the steps of becoming a CPA.
